| Ethos of the School
Aims
At Oakwood our aim is to provide a high
standard of education for all the pupils in the caring and friendly
environment of this village school.
We aim: -
- To provide a positive start to school so
that children are secure and happy and good patterns of learning
and behaviour are established for the future.
- To provide equal opportunities for all children
to take part in the activities the school can offer, fostering
development of the whole child.
- To provide a broad and balanced curriculum,
fulfilling the requirements of the National Curriculum. Through
quality teaching and learning to set high standards and enable
children to perform to the best of their ability and have pride
in their own achievements.
- To involve parents in all aspects of school
life and work in partnership with them as their child progresses
through school.
- To promote a sense of community, both within
the school and outside in the wider world and Hartley Wintney
in particular.
- To provide efficient management of the school
ensuring resources are used effectively, with due regard to current
legislation.
Behaviour
We believe that children’s
behaviour should be directed in a positive manner which demonstrates
good models and rewards good behaviour. This approach is not only
taught through our personal and social education but is an integral
part of being at Oakwood School. Children should be encouraged to
take responsibility for their own behaviour and feel positive about
themselves, have their achievements recognised and receive positive
feedback. The ethos within the school and the example of all adults
who have contact with the children contribute towards the positive
behaviour management.
The management
of behaviour is implemented through an agreed set of moral values
which inform and develop the positive ethos of the classroom and
school as a whole. We call these the Golden Rules. They are:
Do
be gentle, don’t hurt anyone.
Do be kind and helpful, don’t hurt people’s feelings.
Do be honest, don’t cover up the truth.
Do work hard, don’t waste time.
Do look after property, don’t waste or damage things.
Do listen to people, don’t interrupt.
When children have problems
with behaviour, privileges may be withdrawn by the teacher or the
headteacher in more serious instances. When a child’s behaviour
is proving to be a real cause for concern we will always contact
parents to discuss how we can work together to resolve the problem.
We welcome parents’ support in helping us to achieve good
standards of behaviour at our school. For a full copy of the school's
positive behaviour policy is available here.
Attendance
We aim to work closely
with parents to achieve high standards of attendance and punctuality
to ensure children benefit fully from school. We are able to call
on the Education Welfare Service to help when difficulties arise
with a pupil’s attendance. We ask parents to avoid taking
holidays in term time.
