Parents As Partners

Parent Helpers

We welcome the involvement of parents in their children's education and keep parents informed about what their children are learning in school and how parents can help at home.

Many parents and friends of the school also help in school with a variety of activities, such as cooking, reading, computing, sewing and in the library.

The help of parents is always welcome, so if you have some time to give you will find a timetable in the school office where you can sign up to help on a half-termly basis. All voluntary helpers need to have Criminal Record Bureau clearance and the school office can help to organise this for you.

Homework

At Oakwood we believe that homework which is well organised and planned can play an important part in curriculum enrichment and raising standards of achievement for children at our school. We aim to develop a partnership with parents and involve them actively in their child's learning.

Parents are asked to help their children with our Reading Together at Home and School programme. All children bring home a book that is at their own reading level on a daily basis and we ask parents to read these books with their children. Both home and school comment in the child’s reading journal.

We send home information about the half termly topics and a maths activities booklet so that parents can consolidate what is being learned at school in real, practical situations if they wish.

In years 1 and 2 children can also take home their spelling book if they want extra practice.

Homework activities are offered to all parents. However, we do recognise that infant children have a limited amount of time at the end of the school day and that this time is precious for play, family commitments and out of school activities which are vitally important for children’s development.

Reporting to Parents

Parents are invited into school to discuss children’s progress with the teacher each term;

• in the Autumn term to meet the child's teacher and plan for the year ahead

• in the Spring term to discuss the child's Record of Achievement, current work and progress

• in the Summer term to discuss the end of year report.

If parents want to see the class teacher or headteacher at any other time they may contact the school for an appointment.

The Friends of Oakwood

The Friends of Oakwood is our school association for parents, friends and staff and is very active, organising fund raising and social events throughout the year. The Friends of Oakwood raise money to enhance children’s education here and their support ensures that we are a very well resourced school. They have contributed towards computers, books, the library, musical instruments and playground equipment to name a just a few of the projects they have supported.

The skittles evening is always great fun. The family barbeque is a popular annual event.

All parents whose children attend Oakwood School are automatically members of the Friends of Oakwood.
