Starting & Leaving Oakwood School
Admission
In Hampshire children normally start school in the September following
their fourth birthday. The arrangements for Oakwood school allow
for a progressive introduction to full time schooling and are subject
to constant review. The phasing of admissions for September 2009
will be published on the web site shortly. In previous years there
has been a phased admission in three groups:
-
Children with a birthday between 1st
Sept. and 31st Dec. are admitted to school
on a full time basis from September.
-
Children with a birthday between 1st
Jan. and 31st March are admitted to school
for mornings only during September and then full time
from October.
- Children with a birthday between 1st
April and 31st Aug. are admitted to school for
mornings only until the Autumn half term and then full time.
Information on the school's admission
policy is available below.
All the information you need to apply

Induction
At Oakwood we have well established arrangements to make sure children
have a happy and secure start at school.
• Children are
visited at home by a member of the reception staff.
• Reception teachers
visit local pre-schools.
• Pre-school
children are invited to school for special events.
• Children attend
our pre-school "Acorn Group" sessions.
 |
Parents who are considering sending their children to Oakwood
are welcome to talk to the headteacher and look around the
school. We have Open Mornings during the summer and autumn
terms to which all prospective parents are invited.
If you
would like to make an application for admission for your child
to Oakwood Infant School, application forms are available
from the school office early in the autumn term before the
September of admission.
If you want to
make an application for admission outside the normal admission
round please contact
the school
for information and the appropriate form. |
Admissions
Policy
This section provides an overview of the school's Admissions Policy.
The information given here is intended to help with understanding
the policy, and nothing included here forms any part of the policy
itself. Parents wishing to apply for their children to be admitted
to Oakwood School are advised to read the Oakwood
School Admission Policy.
The number of pupils
to be admitted to the school is 60 and the deadline for applications
is midday on Friday 20th November 2009.
For the main admission
round, all preferences will be considered simultaneously and ranked
in accordance with the admission criteria. If more than one school
can offer a place, the parent’s highest stated preference
will be allocated.
Late applications are considered after all on-time applications
have been processed.
For children applying
to start in September 2010, a letter offering a place at the school
will be sent to successful applicants by the County Council on 22nd
January 2010.
If the school is oversubscribed
then the following priority order applies:
- Children with a special
requirement to attend the school (see the complete
policy for details).
- Children in the catchment
area who will have a brother or sister at the school or at Greenfields
School on the date of their admission.
- Children within the
catchment area of the school
- Children outside of
the catchment area who will have a brother or sister at the school
on the date of their admission.
- Other children outside
of the catchment area prioritised in favour of children living
closest to the school.
Within each of the above
categories, priority is given to children who live closest to the
school.
If all of the available
places are allocated, the local authority will operate a waiting
list. Parents who wish their child to be included on the waiting
list must inform the local authority in writing.
Transfer
Arrangements
At the age of seven children
transfer to junior school. Most children from Oakwood go to our
linked school, Greenfields
Junior School, situated a few hundred yards away. We have well
established arrangements to make sure the transfer is as happy and
smooth as possible for the children involved.
They include:
• infant children
regularly visit Greenfields to watch assemblies and concerts
• each term Year 2 children spend time in Year 3 classes
with their teachers
• joint staff meetings are held to make sure there is continuity
in teaching and learning
• there is careful transfer of records of children's progress.
After the age of eleven,
children go on to secondary school, usually to our linked secondary,
Robert
Mays Secondary School in Odiham. The headteachers of both Greenfields
and Robert May's welcome enquiries about their respective schools. |
